TopHistory

Grayslake area was developed by a massive Wisconsin glacier that melted over 12,000 years ago. The melted glacier created several lakes and wetlands, including fertile soil suitable for farming.

The region’s earliest citizen was William M. Gray, from Massachusetts, who settled in 1840 near the shores of an unidentified lake. The area and lake was soon named Gray’s Lake after William Gray purchased the land around 1842.

The Wisconsin Central Railroad Company arrived in Grayslake in the early 1880s. The construction of the railroad helped put Grayslake on the map and linking the village to Chicago and Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  The Grayslake railroad station was opened by July of 1886. Nine years later, in May of 1895, Grayslake was officially incorporated with a population of 325 residents.

Over the years, Grayslake’s area population grew slowly while preserving its scenic rural settings. The area’s peaceful lakes, natural wetlands, and green woodlands have remained undisturbed and enjoyed by many area residents. The population of Grayslake and the surrounding communities more than doubled during the 1990s.
